MOSTRA COMPETITIVA/COMPETITIVE EXHIBITION
The relocation of the capital, from Rio de Janeiro to the Central Plateau, provided a new main role for Brazilian history. The cinematic look on the city of Brasília showed its birth with the huge construction sites, and monuments under construction, and also the migratory flow towards the Eldorado dream that filled the spatial vastness with gestures and affections.
Cinema Urbana pays homage to Brasília's 60th anniversary and proposes a new look at the city, which in addition to its urban qualities is not only constituted by its formal, but by its popular, banal and ordinary spaces. Brasília in its 60s has been welcoming, reproducing and transforming the ways of living and experiencing a city.
The reflection on the theme Learning from Brasília - borrowed from the title of the book “Learning from Las Vegas”, by Venturi, Scott Brown and Izenour - guided the selection of films that help to trace a historical and affective perspective of the city, from memories, buildings, lights and shadows. The possibility of belonging in the midst of flows and transformations shows that the architectural work was sensitive to territorial development, and today houses the population of the third Brazilian metropolis. Brasília went beyond the utopias, it was able to bring out the latencies of an imaginariness focused on the mystical, the artistic, the poetic values, but it also materialized the Brazilian social inequality in its soil.
In this selection - which goes beyond Brasilia, but orbits around and contextualizes it - it is possible to notice the presence of modern colonial architecture that emerges in colorful and sinuous lines of Maputo. The right to be in the city and the access to housing have yet to be conquered, even if we talk about Lisbon or Hong Kong. Cities that witness the capital accumulation, and the real estate speculation changing the landscape of large cities.
And, 60 years later, Brasília still inspires the relationship with utopia, futurism, a possible city. From this visual archeology, cinema becomes a device for understanding urban imagery and its ramifications amidst memories, archives, residents, workers and their experiences.
